Here’s a contemporary twist on the much-painted form of Saint Sebastian—the artist kept his shirt on.

Covering up that writhing, muscled torso seems to almost defeat the purpose of painting the hunky martyr, the patron saint of soldiers, athletes, and archers whose steamy depictions by a parade of art history’s greats have made him something of a homoerotic icon. 

Christopher Winter bucks tradition and expectation by going the schoolboy route in Alfa Centauri St. Sebastian, who looks like he has plenty of time for the pain. He was hanging around Art Miami, part of an all-Saint-Sebastian stand at Edelman Arts built around a ca.- 1530 Titian.
